Summer wear dresses are not just about frocks and maxis – think jump suits, linen or cotton pants and comfortable tees as well.

Isn’t summer a great season? Sure, it gets really hot and you feel constantly dehydrated. But once you’ve had your fill of cooling drinks and sat inside an air-conditioned, you can face the season with a bit more equanimity!

Dressing right for the summer is key to feeling comfortable and facing the harsh sunlight with a smile. Most people don’t shop for the summer, making do with the clothes they already have with the clothes in their wardrobe. But styles change, new fabrics make an appearance, and you owe it to yourself to have a fresh new wardrobe in time for the summer.

So whip out your favourite online shopping app and start browsing for summer wear and dresses. And don’t stop at dresses, go with other clothing in the right fabrics and colours, like –

1. Frocks and maxis. The number one choice when it comes to summer wear dresses, is frocks in a floaty fabric. On days when even looking outside the window makes you sweat, it is best to stick to frocks and maxis that let your skin breathe and do not hug you like a long lost friend. Strappy frocks in chiffon or rayon, or strapless maxi dresses (you can throw a light shrug across your shoulders if you feel self-conscious) are excellent choices in summer wear dresses. Whether short or long, dresses keep your body ventilated and sweat-free.

2. Jump suits. But who says summer clothing is only about flirty dresses? Think different, think jump suits. You can get the cutest styles in different colours, and you can choose to wear a singlet underneath or a light cotton tee that absorbs sweat quickly. Jump suits may be short in length (a few inches above the knee) or skim the calf. Either way, pick a suit that cinches at the waist and lets your legs move freely without constraint.

3. Trousers and capris. It’s all good to wear maxis and jump suits when you’re out on a holiday or on trips with friends. But when you go to work, you have to toe the office’s dress code. But we’re not suggesting that you trudge to work staggering under the weight of pant suits and heavy salwar kameez sets. Instead, try cigarette pants or fitted chinos in light cotton or polyester viscose, and on the days that the office dresses down (usually on Friday) you can wear casual cotton trousers with drawstrings that help you adjust the pant length. Cargo pants and capris are a great option for last minute dinner plans with buddies.

4. Skirts. Who can forget skirts when it comes to picking summer wear dresses? Skirts are an invaluable part of your summer wardrobe, and they can be as fun or formal as you want them to be. Ditch formal pencil skirts in black and navy blue for lighter colours. An A-line silhouette is better than a fitted one so that you won’t feel so hot. Flared skirts are also a great option, and you can pair them with a simple cotton tee or a formal cotton shirt for work.

5. Tees. They are fun and versatile, and they transition from morning to evening quite seamlessly. Tee shirts in light cotton are best for the summer. You could try full sleeved tees to protect your arms from the strong sunlight. A good option for cargos and shorts is striped tees.
